MTB GLASSES

Mountain biking is a globally known and beloved discipline, synonymous with pure adrenaline, speed, fast passes, kicking up dust, jumps, and vibrations. Every professional rider or MTB enthusiast is constantly seeking to enhance their performance and push their limits.

DEMON has designed and created a line of MTB glasses built with cutting-edge materials to provide riders with perfect and consistent visibility of the route and maximum safety for their eyes.

Every rider seeks increasingly high-performance materials and technologies to have fun during their outings while elevating their performance in total safety.

There are some essential needs for eye protection that all riders, whether professional or amateur, share:

  • Perfect visibility in changing light conditions
  • Impact resistance
  • Maximum stability of the glasses
  • Ergonomics and lightweight design

DEMON MTB glasses are designed and built according to these four fundamental characteristics, distinguishing them as technical glasses specifically for mountain biking, rather than just ordinary sports glasses.

Why are these requirements so important?

We will now explain the 4 fundamental requirements on which DEMON's design and creation of MTB glasses are based:

  • PERFECT VISIBILITY IN LIGHT CHANGES: Mountain biking often involves frequent transitions between light and shadow, such as entering tunnels, forested areas, or shaded terrain. These changes can force riders to slow down or even momentarily halt their activity due to difficulty in seeing the route ahead. This not only causes frustration but also detracts from the enjoyment of the ride.

Selecting high-performing MTB glasses is crucial to effectively tackle such situations. The most ideal lenses for optimal performance and safety are photochromic lenses. Constructed with high-quality polycarbonate, these lenses offer outstanding optical clarity and are virtually unbreakable, providing maximum protection and resistance to impacts from debris like leaves, branches, stones, and insects.

Photochromic lenses undergo a reversible chemical reaction when exposed to UV radiation or sunlight, causing them to darken. When the light exposure diminishes, the lenses gradually return to their transparent state. For instance, when entering a shaded area like a tunnel or dense forest, the lens reverts to its non-darkened state, offering protection against airborne particles. Upon exiting the shaded area, the lens resumes the darkening process, reducing glare and enhancing visibility in bright light conditions.

This dynamic lens technology, which continuously adjusts to changes in light conditions, ensures perfect and consistent visibility of the route for the athlete. There are two types of photochromic lens technologies available for MTB glasses, each catering to specific rider needs, thereby significantly enhancing performance and safety:

    • DCHROM Photochromic Lens: This advanced photochromic lens features a slightly darker base color, reaching category 3 darkness (similar to sunglasses with mirrored lenses) during maximum activation. Notable for its rapid transition between light and dark states, it provides remarkable eye relaxation, particularly on days with intense sunlight. Recommended for riders navigating dense forests while also traversing open spaces, where prolonged use of lighter lenses may prove cumbersome. However, it may become too dark for nighttime use, for which the Smoke photochromic lens is recommended.

Smoke Photochromic Lens: This particular photochromic lens differs from the DCHROM lens in its coloring during the phase of maximum transparency. It initiates the same chemical reaction that darkens the lens when exposed to sunlight. However, in addition to starting out lighter, it remains half a shade lighter at maximum activation. This special photochromic lens is particularly suitable for riders who frequently encounter long stretches of dense forest, those who often ride at dawn and sunset when light is low, and especially for those who engage in night excursions where a completely transparent filter is needed for protection against airborne debris like air, leaves, branches, and projections.

For MTB riders with these specific needs, we recommend choosing this type of lens to avoid any potential inconveniences arising from poor visibility of the route.

IMPACT RESISTANCE (Lenses): Another fundamental aspect in the design of MTB glasses is the choice of safe and unbreakable materials. Mountain biking, being the cycling discipline that most requires protection for the rider, demands cutting-edge materials for total eye protection. Shatterproof polycarbonate lenses have been created specifically for eye protection, capable of withstanding even strong impacts in a safe and effective manner.

The peculiarity of polycarbonate lenses mounted on all MTB glasses lies in their elasticity and resistance. In the event of a strong impact, the lens distributes the shock across its entire surface, completely preventing the formation of small fragments harmful to eye health. Instead, it creates a "cobweb" effect that renders the lens invalid. The use of polycarbonate not only lightens the weight of MTB glasses but also significantly enhances safety for the rider's eyes.

In the following photos, you will see the result of tests applied to polycarbonate lenses, subjected to strong and repeated impacts with a steel hammer to simulate accidents. The lenses did not suffer any breakage; instead, in some areas, they deformed to absorb the impact. Ensuring the best possible protection for the athlete's eyes is the cornerstone on which DEMON bases the creation of all lenses in the collection.

IMPACT RESISTANCE (Frame): The frame of the MTB glasses is also impact-resistant and made of TR90, a special composition of Nylon and Carbon fiber. This combination makes the glasses 20% lighter than conventional materials while also enhancing their resistance to accidental impacts and mechanical stress. The nylon component provides the glasses with excellent elasticity and increased durability. It remains non-deformable at both high and low temperatures, ensuring longevity and reliable performance over time.

    • MAXIMUM STABILITY OF THE GLASSES: TR90 plays a fundamental role in ensuring the stability of MTB glasses. When worn, the glasses effectively conform to the wearer's head without feeling tight and then return to their original shape when not in use.
Having glasses that fit snugly to the face provides greater stability, especially during strong vibrations and sudden movements typical of mountain biking. Additionally, rubberized parts of the frame, made of soft non-slip Megol, further enhance stability and prevent any minor slips.
With the glasses providing total stability, you can confidently tackle even the most extreme and bumpy routes with safety in mind. Furthermore, the glasses are designed to distribute weight evenly, preventing any frontal imbalance toward the tip of the nose. Every detail is meticulously crafted to ensure maximum performance.

    • ERGONOMICS AND LIGHTNESS: An often overlooked aspect is the choice of construction materials for the frame. However, the shape of each pair of glasses is meticulously designed to provide absolute comfort. TR90 and Megol are ergonomic, hypoallergenic materials crafted to ensure maximum comfort, even in the most extreme conditions.
Opting for stable glasses with total comfort is crucial when selecting your MTB eyewear. Wearing uncomfortable or heavy glasses for extended periods not only distracts or annoys the rider but also significantly reduces performance.
